"The Halls of Haunt" scares people, but raises money for community students

CHEBOYGAN, MI -- We know one thing tonight, and we have proof, a local school in Northern Michigan is haunted.

Ghosts, ghouls, and goblins scream terror inside the closed down Cheboygan Inverness Elementary School.

7&4's Andrew Keller man's up and heads inside and shows us how the terror and torture reaches out to the community.

The things that go bump in the night scream and terrorize you inside "The Hall of Terrors."

Inside of the closed-down Inverness Elementary in Cheboygan, the classrooms that once taught kids now torture everyone who dares to go through.

"There’s nothing scarier than a haunted school," said Ronda Van Himbergen, one of the organizers.

Zombies, wacky witches, and little goblins infest the quarter-mile trail that keeps you on your heels.

"It really only takes 15-17 minutes to run though, and most people will run through," laughs Van Himbergen.

50 Cheboygan Middle and High Schoolers dress up and do their best to knock off your socks.

"We give out trophies at the end of the year of who can either get people to pee or poop their pants, and we've had both," said Van Himbergen.

But what sets this haunt aside from others is where the money goes.  It's a huge fundraiser for the Cheboygan Jaycee’s and they put the money toward their December “Secret Santa” project, college scholarships, and help fund the Cheboygan Chiefs’ hockey team.

“It really benefits a lot of the kids more than anybody," said Van Himbergen.

Each night 150 to 200 people risk it  and several never make it.  Would you???

If you're ready for a scare, the haunt's open Friday night, 8:30 until 10:30, same hours Saturday and again next weekend.  Come through if you dare.

The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under.
