ST. IGNACE (AP) --  A tractor-trailer driver is dead after his truck crossed the center lane of the Mackinac Bridge Friday and struck a car heading in the opposite direction.

Mackinac Bridge Authority administrator Bob Sweeney said the driver likely suffered a heart attack early Friday afternoon while driving south near mid-span of the 5-mile-long bridge.

He missed one car but hit another going in the opposite direction.

Two people in the car were taken to a local hospital but Sweeney says their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Identities haven't been released.

Police said part of the truck had been hanging over bridge railing, but was in no danger of falling into the Straits of Mackinac.

The bridge had reopened by late afternoon.

The bridge connects Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas.
