Northern Michigan wineries will begin harvesting grapes in early Oct.
TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Northern Michigan wineries make up a large part of Michigan's economy. This year, many are expecting to have a great harvest and banner year thanks to mother nature.
Michigan's wine and grapes produce about 790-Million-dollars in business every year. Wineries across the region are gearing up for their busiest month of the season, with grape harvest just a few days away.
"For the aromatic white varieties that we all produce, they are looking wonderful. Quality is up, quantity is up, so it should be a really good harvest for those," said Coryn Briggs of Black Star Farms.
The grape harvest is also looking good at Chateau Chantal. Wine makers say the weather forecast continues to be key to the crops success.
"We don't want a hot October, we want a nice, sunny warm October with cool nights where it cools off so that our mean temperature is about 58 degrees or something," explained Mark Johnson.
The harvesting of the grapes will begin the first days of October and continue for several weeks.
