ACME -- Northern Michigan school leaders are focusing on the impact the information super highway is having on education.
The "Online Learning Revolution" was the topic of a conference Tuesday at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme. Educators took a closer look into how online courses can be a great way for students to find individualized instruction. They also discussed the cost effectiveness of online learning versus traditional schools.
Tom Watkins the former Michigan State Superintendent of Public Education took part in the event, along with Michael Murray, Superintendent of Suttons Bay Schools. Bryan Klochack, Principal of Michigan Connections Academy, was involved.
The conference was moderated by Michael Van Beek, Mackinac Center Education Policy Director. Others at the event weighed in on the benefits and how the world wide web is benefiting and will continue to shape the future of students.
"It's exciting because we've all seen how technology has changed," explained Michael Jahr, Mackinac Center Spokesman. "Everything from cell phones to automobiles, but we're still in many ways educating our children the way we did 100 years ago."
With state budget cuts impacting every school district, online instruction is proving to be less expensive than traditional face-to-face instruction.
