Traverse Narcotics Team made big bust

TRAVERSE CITY -- Just days after the pharmacy break-in and heroin bust at a Traverse City convienant store, 7&4 News is taking a closer look at the drug problem in the area.

The Traverse Narcotics Team just finished several a big case involving about 20 arrests of people selling pharmaceutical drugs, mostly opiates, illegally. Detective Lt. Kip Belcher says the more drug dealers police take off the street, the more desperate addicts are to try to find their fix.

Chris Hindbaugh, the Executive Director at Addiction Treatment Services in Traverse City agrees. He says many drug users who walk through the doors now have a criminal history.

The clinic has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people with opiate addictions so far this year. In 2010 they treated 20 people, so far this year 38 people have sought help.
