LEELANAU CO. -- Fans of UpNorthLive's Facebook page voted to hear more about an area veterinarians who will be helping spay and neuter pets for families struggling financially.

Cherry Bend Animal Hospital and Cherryland Humane Society are teaming up for the first ever spay and neuter-a-thon! Veterinarians will help the less fortunate fix their dogs and cats at no cost.

"We feel that as veterinarians that we should help fight against and in terms of our participation, I think veterinarians should embrace their civic responsibility and give back to the community and I think that's kind of the ideology for the spay and neuterathon," explained Dr. John Sheard.

The spay -neuter-a-thon will be held Saturday at the Cherry Bend Animal Hospital on Cherry Bend Road in Leelanau County.  To set up a time to take in your pet, you do have to call the Cherryland Humane Society before Saturday.

The phone number to call is: (231) 946-5116 to sign up for the program.
