MANISTEE -- Federal investigators are joining police in trying to find the person responsible for sending a threatening email to hundreds of students and teachers in Manistee County.

The email caused Manistee High School, Manistee Catholic Central and several other schools in the surrounding area to operate in "secure mode" Friday afternoon.

The Manistee City Police, along with FBI and Michigan State Police are continuing their investigation.  Friday afternoon, investigators interviewed an 18-year-old suspect.  The FBI removed two computers (one lap top, one tower) from the teenagers home for forensic analysis.

Based off the interview with the suspect,  he was taken in for mental evaluation in an attempt to have him involuntarily committed.  By law, in order for a person to be involuntarily committed, they have to be a danger to themselves or other people.  After being evaluated, it was determined the suspect did not meet the requirements for involuntary committal.

The suspect was released and remains at his mother's home.

Investigators say these cases are time consuming and can be a lengthy process. This investigation is continuing at this time while evidence continues to be compiled.
