ACME TWP. (AP) -- The first of four hearings will take place Monday focusing on a proposal for a Meijer store in Grand Traverse County.
Meijer wants to build a store in Acme Township. The first plan brought a lot of opposition when it was introduced in 2004. After a dispute over zoning, Meijer funded a recall effort in 2007 to get rid of some Acme Township officials. The retailer was fined $190,000 for violating campaign finance laws.
Now Meijer is campaigning once again to build in the township, but is gaining more support. Dan Kelly with the Acme Business Association says the new Meijer would bring 200-300 permanent jobs to the area.
"We need some commercial balance out here. We need jobs. There's an awful lot of buildings that are vacant out here and we really just basically need the benefit of having a commercial entity," explained Kelly.
The hearing will take place at the Williamsburg Dinner Theatre on M-72 at 7:00 PM. 7&4 News will be there and bring you all the details coming up on 7&4 News at 11.
