New concussion rules for HS football
TRAVERSE CITY -- Friday is the first night of football season for many high schools in the area. This year teams will have to follow stricter rules when treating players with concussions.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association will now require any athlete who shows signs of concussion to be cleared by a medical professional before returning to the field. Referees will need a written doctor's note before an athlete can re-enter the game.
Doctor Vincent Prusick, team physician for the Saint Francis High School football team says the increased awareness of what contact sports can do to kids is important. Concussions swell the brain causing headaches, nauseau, confusion, and even depression.
Dr. Prusick says, "Its actually the motion that occurs in the brain its somewhat like shaking a bowl of jello and after you stop shaking it it continues to move."
