Father Andy is 90 years-old and has served in Peshawbestown for 30 years
PESHAWBESTOWN, MI -- For most people, there's an age you reach when you decide it's time to retire.
Tonight, we found one man who says he's not even close, and on Sunday's, he says it's all worth it.
It's not the question of why Father Andy Buvala does it, it's more like the question of how. He's 90 years-old, he is the priest at one church, a sacramental minister at another, and still has time to drive his golf cart, which at his age, is his only way to get around.
"I'm restricted to not being able to drive, and to respond to needs, that's the trying part," said Fr. Bulava.
For 30 years, he's been the priest at the small Native American Catholic Church, Blessed Kateri, in Peshawbestown. He also pitches in at St. Wencelous Catholic Church.
"He believes it, he serves it, and he's a good man, and he's been around a long time, so he's sticking it out like anyone should stick it out when they're dedicated to a cause or a mission," said Tony Ciccone, a church-goer.
"I think what means a lot to me is he's incorporated Native American culture to his masses," said Francis Wanageshik, a member of the church.
And the Native American culture can be seen when you enter the church. There's a drum, Native American turtles which symbolize the creation of land, and a display of eagle feathers. During Sunday Mass, church-goers say the cultures mesh beautifully. Father Andy says he loves what he does and he's satisfied with where he is.
"I've had a contract here for 90 days, it's renewable, i guess it's been renewed, i don't know," Father Andy laughs.
"He's kind and compassionate, he's sensitive, he has a great sense of humor," said Sister Barbara Kennison of Blessed Kateri Church.
"Father Andy is our hometown hero, he's the best," said Gaytha McVay, a church member.
And because of his long-term service to his faith and the lives of the many he's touched, we've named Father Andy Buvala this month's Your Town Hero.
"It means that my life has been worthwhile," said Fr. Buvala.
