Group wants ban on studded snowmobiles
OSCEOLA CO. -- A group is voicing concern tonight after they say a recently paved trail system has been severely damaged over the winter.
Nearly $3 million dollars was spent last year to pave White Pine Trail which connects Cadillac all the way to Grand Rapids. Work finished up last fall and over the winter snowmobile studs left these scrapes and grooves on the surface. The surface does not have many potholes, but the damaged surface could cause rollerbladers or bikers to lose control and fall.
Now some trail users are fighting to make changes to who can ride the trails in order to keep them in one piece.
Rex Houseman, Friend of White Pine Chairman says "Everybody gets to use the trail year round, I think its imperative we ban studs so we have a nice trail to enjoy."
Tom D'Ambrosio a handcyclist says, "I was devastated when I saw the damage. I dreamed about riding the trail all winter long because it was so good in the fall."
We talked to Senator Darwin Booher who says he will meet with the group in the next few weeks to look at the damage, and then he will decide if legislation is needed to ban studded snowmobiles on the trails.
