TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Several local organizations are stepping up their efforts to help seniors make it through the latest heat wave.

The Traverse City Senior Center is serving as a “cooling station” for folks who may not have air conditioning at home.

“Because we're an air conditioned building, we're the place to be when you need to cool off. Many seniors live in small apartments or in homes with no air conditioning, so it’s nice to know that there is a place to go where they can cool off and get a little refreshment,” said Lori Wells, Traverse City Senior Center.

In Charlevoix County, Charlevoix United Methodist Church is another “cooling station” people can take advantage of. Church leaders said they will be open Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is welcome to use their facility at 102 State Street. The Boyne Area Senior Center will also open its doors for use as a "cooling station."

The Salvation Army in Cadillac  will also be open as a cooling center.  It's located at 725 Wright Street.  It will be open Wednesday starting at 9:00am.

Local care givers say that seniors are more prone to heat-related health problems. During the heat, they recommend senior citizens avoid caffeine, drink a lot of water, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity and wear loose-fitting clothing.
