LEELANAU COUNTY -- The festival celebration of cherries is ready to roll but what about the local fruit? 7&4 News checked in with MSU Extension to find out about this year's cherry yield.
We’re told it's expecting 110 million pounds for the crop this season -- which is plenty of fruit for the northwest area markets.
Although weather conditions were difficult for growers this year but MSU Extension officials say they were able to get by without serious damage.
MSU Extension Educator Erin Lizotte says, "We did receive some hail and quite a few storms that we've gotten this spring-- that was a concern but it seems to be isolated. We skated through that early weather with minimal damage."
Local sweet cherries will be harvested in the next 10 days and tart cherries are expected to be harvested in 3 or 4 weeks.
