UpNorthLive's Facebook fans voted to hear more about a new website resource to find out about beach and water safety.

Before you take your family to the beach, officials with the State Department of Environmental Quality are urging you to check up on the water quality.

They've compiled information on water bacteria levels for more than 1,200 Michigan beaches into one online database.   The water resource can assure you that your favorite beach is safe for swimming.

Sarah Ray, with the Grand Traverse County Health Department believes its a great resource for families.

"Obviously the beaches are a huge draw for visitors and tourist in our area so we want to make sure that everyone is able to access those waters and stay healthy," said Ray.

The DEQ says water quality at some beaches can be affected by runoff and sewer overflows during heavy and long rains, so it's a good idea to check the website often.
