MANISTEE -- There's a new place for boaters to pull into port in Manistee. The nearly one-million-dollar Municipal Marina building is now open.

"It's a beautiful building, and it's a phenomenal facility," said Dave Bachman, Harbormaster and Director of Public Safety for the City of Manistee.

The Marina can accommodate boats up to 60 feet in slips, and up to 100 feet broadside, each with water and 30/50 amp power. Fuel and pump-out are available.

"We are also the only municipal marina in the state of Michigan that offers a special dockside lift for wheelchair-bound boaters," said Bachman. An additional benefit for sailors is the absence of bridges between Lake Michigan and the Marina. And for all boaters, repair facilities are available nearby.

Now when boaters visit this Victorian Port City, they will find that the new Marina facilities include a spacious boaters' lounge with large screen TV, a coffee bar and microwave, free WiFi, a children's lounge with separate TV, and a special TV just for tracking Lake Michigan's ever-changing weather patterns. No boater overestimates the importance of clean restrooms with hot showers, and the Marina now offers roomy, barrier-free facilities that include baby-changing stations and a large laundry room.

Robert Shapiro of southern Illinois, left Kentucky Lake in November of 2010 to begin a solo voyage on Dream Quest, his 35-ft. Mainship Trawler on the 6,000 mile trek around the Great Loop. He stopped at Manistee's Municipal Marina for the night June 22, before continuing his journey home.

"I've been in scores of marinas over the last seven months, and I find this to be one of the nicest, most accommodating. Everybody has been very attentive to my needs, and that's very helpful when you're traveling alone." A photographer, Shapiro said he'll be self-publishing a book about his travels, and Manistee will be included.
