Former Congressman Bart Stupak addresses a crowd. The man accused of threatening him plans to use insanity as defense.
BAY CITY (AP) -- Attorneys for a man accused of threatening a northern Michigan congressman say they'll use an insanity defense at trial.
Russell Hesch's legal team filed the notice last week in federal court in Bay City. Lawyers say the expert will be Dr. Gerald Shiener of Birmingham.
Hesch is a 74-year-old West Branch man who is charged with writing a letter that threatened to paint the Mackinac Bridge with Bart Stupak's blood because he voted for a health care law. Stupak represented northern Michigan in Congress at the time but now is retired.
Federal Judge Thomas Ludington is holding a hearing Monday. Trial is set for Sept. 13.
