MANISTEE -- Students in Manistee County will have a new resource to help with rising college costs.
An anonymous donor gave $100,035 to the Manistee County Community Foundation. The contribution establishes the Manistee County Scholarship Fund. An endowment that will provide a lasting source of support for assisting Manistee County students with paying for the cost of higher education.
Beginning in 2012, the income of the fund will be used to present scholarships annually to graduating seniors of any Manistee County high school who demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.
"This remarkable gift is outstanding news for our area students and their families. We can all appreciate the increasing importance of a higher education to the success of our young people. Knowing that the cost of college and trade school is a significant barrier to many students in our county, I am so pleased that this new fund will provide needed financial support," said Community Foundation board chair, Beth McCarthy. The donor also made arrangements to leave a legacy gift to the scholarship fund. The donor stated that the decision was made to give the gift through the Manistee County Community Foundation because, "I know that you'll do a good job."
