Leland loses power for 21 hours, businesses suffer
LELAND -- Businesses in Leland spent Wednesday without power forcing most shops and restaurants to close.
7&4's Lauren Amstutz joins us now to explain the impact on the small community.
Strong winds and storms blew quickly through Northern Michigan Tuesday night causing problems in many communities including Leland. Business owners in the historic fishtown district were in the dark for 21 hours.
Sean Wanroy, the General Manager of The Cove says, "The power's been out since about six last night, we really haven't heard any indication of when its going to be back on."
David Kareck, Village Cheese Shanty Owner says, "I can't be open so I’m not open today and you can't get these days back. You get one shot in June, it's a beautiful day in Leland and I have to be closed."
Michelle Murdick, Co-owner of Murdick's Fudge kept working even without electricity.
Murdick says, "We did lose some products but nothing we can do about that now. I've worked a long time, I can do this in my sleep, I can do it in the dark."
Other stores and restaurants without generators closed their doors, they lost customers.
Mary Jo Grogan says, "We came to get some coffee because we have no power and we can't buy it because the store doesn't have power."
