TRAVERSE CITY -- Our Facebook fans voted to learn more about the Traverse City Toxic Cherries roller derby team.
The first team in the Traverse City Roller Derby League is gearing up for the first home bout. The Traverse City Toxic Cherries are rockin' the rink and making a name in northern Michigan!
The team began about a year and a half ago and is now made up of 25 skaters - including what they call "fresh meat" or new recruits - all with very unique names!
They practice for at least six hours every week, and behind the scenes volunteers put in ten to 100 hours of their time to make sure the business end of it is taken care of.
Roller derby is a fast paced and rough sport. The players have had fractured noses, a lot of bruises and some broken ankles.
The Toxic Cherries are psyched to get in front of the home town crowd. The Memorial Mayhem Roller Derby Bout is at the Grand Traverse Civic Center Saturday. They take on the Jacktown Rollers starting at 7:00 PM.
Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 in advance.
