Timothy McNitt, a teacher at Pellston Schools is charged with assaulting and stalking students
PELLSTON -- An Emmet County teacher is behind bars, accused of assaulting students.
Timothy Earl McNitt of Brutus was arrested Wednesday on a four count felony warrant issued by the Emmet County Prosecutors Office. One count was for CSC-Second Degree, one count of Stalking a Minor, and two counts of Accosting Children for Immoral Purposes.
The warrant was issued as a result of the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office investigation of the complaint of alleged inappropriate conduct between minor students and a staff member at the Pellston School District.
McNitt was arraigned Wednesday and a personal recognizance bond of $20,000 was set. McNitt is scheduled to appear in the 90th District Court on June 15, 2011 for a preliminary exam hearing.
McNitt was a physical education and math teacher for 7th and 8th grade students. He was also a varsity volleyball coach for the high school.
Police say the victims, all students from Pellston Schools, came forward with complaints about the teacher.
"At this time, the original complaint we received on Wednesday involved a minor student, since that time, we've had another come forward and we're currently investigating a third," explained Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin.
Investigators say the three students all told similar stories about interactions with the employee that crossed the line.
The school released a press release Wednesday stating:
"Pellston Public Schools is deeply concerned regarding this matter and has taken immediate action to place Mr. McNitt on paid administrative leave, relieve him from any and all teaching and coaching responsibilities, remove him from the school setting and prohibit him from contacting any students."
