TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Local environmental officials unleashed a secret weapon today to sniff out any dangerous levels of E.coli in our areas waters; specially trained dogs.
The Watershed Center has hired Environmental Canine Services to bring in two dogs to walk along Boardman Lake and the Grand Traverse Bay.
The animals can smell human sewage and help find leaks in sanitary sewer systems.
"Part of the training process is what we do is train them to give us a specific alert and each dog is a little bit different. In the case with Sable, the German Sheppard mix, he actually gives a bark witch is an aggressive alert. With Logan, who is our Rough Coat Collie that here with us today, he actually does a sit," said Scott Reynolds of Environmental Canine Services.
This is the second time the dogs have been brought in to the Traverse City area.
The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians paid to bring in the canines.
