Wi-Fi 'hot spots' help Elk Rapids community
ELK RAPIDS -- After close to a year of planning and organizing, a small Michigan community is finally under an umbrella of high speed internet.
Elk Rapids business owners and government officials partnered with Cherry Capital Connection to install broadband internet throughout downtown.
The network has received more than 20,000 hits so far, and 15 businesses have signed on. Cherry Capital Connection says the benefit of this program is that people aren't tied to one physical building for Wi-Fi, they can use the internet on the water, camping, and all over downtown Elk Rapids.
There are also new features like a community page and signs that mark where hot spots are located.
Meanwhile, Traverse City is still without community Wi-Fi.
Traverse City Light and Power Executive Director, Ed Rice says they're still working with the Downtown Development Authority on the details of their plan. It will cost the DDA $50,000 a year to install.
