Homes evacuated along parts of the Muskegon River

NEWAYGO CO. -- A flood warning continues for the Muskegon River near Croton.

The National Weather Service issued the flood Warning Wednesday evening. The flood stage is 9.00 feet. At the time of the warning the river was at 9.06 feet. As of 4pm Wednesday the river had risen to 10.47 feet and is currently forecasted to peak at 10.80 - 11.0 feet by Friday.

Areas directly impacted include Devil's Hole, Anderson Flats, Old Woman's Bend, Sycamore, 100th street, and Lower Bridgeton area.

Volunteers with Newaygo County Emergency Services have assessed low lying areas along the Muskegon River and met with homeowners in those areas.

As a result of the flood, 20 houses are currently affected with water surrounding them, Salmon Run Campground is closed, South River Drive by Maple Island Drive in Bridgeton Township is closed, and approximately 35 additional homes will be affected as the water continues to rise.

For your safety,

· Do not walk through a flooded area. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down.

· Don't drive through a flooded area. Just two feet of water can lift and move a car.

· Keep away from downed power lines and any other electrical wires.

· Keep a close eye on your surroundings. If your escape route starts to flood, please evacuate to a safe location.

If you feel it is unsafe to stay in your home due to flooding and you need to evacuate this evening and need assistance for sheltering, please contact the American Red Cross at 231-726-3555.
