PRESQUE ISLE CO., MI -- A local sheriff's office has been given the go ahead to buy a new K-9 unit.
Thursday, Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners approved the Sheriff's request to use non-taxpayer funds and purchase a new pooch.
The Cheboygan County Sheriff's K-9, Taser. visited the commissioners Thursday and his handler displayed Taser's drug-sniffing abilities.
He visited as a Sheriff's Deputy explained to the board why they need to purchase a new partner.
"The feeling that we'll get if we, when we do save a child that may be missing in the woods or lost or an elderly man who walks away from his house, it's something that we can show pride it," said Presque Isle County Sheriff's Deputy Dean Tebo.
Deputy Tebo says a new K-9 unit will cost about $16,000 and will be paid for using private funds
Right now the office has raised about half the money needed to purchase the new dog.
They expect to raise the rest within the next couple of months.
Deputy Tebo says you can help the Sheriff's Office reach its goal. If you'd like to help bring the new K-9 to Presque Isle County, call the department at (989) 734-2156 or e-mail Deputy Tebo, d_tebo25@hotmail.com.
