High gas prices prompt surge in carpooling
TRAVERSE CITY -- The high price of gas may be turning off motorists, but it's turning on local carpooling efforts.
Tuesday, Montessori at Glenn Loomis administrators posted a signup sheet to help parents hold down the costs of getting the kids too and from the school.
The Children's House is also working on a carpooling schedule for parents. Colleen Christensen, the Director of Operations says because of the school's green status with the state, she is always trying to think of ways to conserve energy. With gas prices above $4.00, now it's also a matter of saving parents money.
Christensen says, "I expect we'll see more carpooling going on. I’ve heard people talking about getting that organized though our parent organization."
As for savings, people 7&4 News spoke with say carpooling helps them keep roughly an extra $30 a week in their pockets, that's more than $1500 a year.
