GAYLORD, MI -- The Gaylord community is mourning after news of a local Marine killed in combat.

26-year old Marine Corp Sergeant David Day died this past weekend while serving in Afghanistan.

His parents told the Gaylord Herald-Times that they're headed to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Tuesday to pick up David's body.

Teachers at Gaylord High School who remember David say he was passionate about government and politics and died doing something he believed in.

"He is an American Hero, he was out there on the front lines helping people, trying to help people come to grips with what's best with their country. Terribly sad news," said Susan Moore, a Gaylord High School teacher.

Still no details on funeral arrangements.

Once that information is released, we will pass that along to you.

The Department of Defense has released details about the death.  To read their release, CLICK HERE.
