Mackinaw City has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for the site of Cheboygan County's highly anticipated Veterans Health Clinic. In 2008, residents in Cheboygan County collected over 5,000 signatures and were chosen by the VA for a clinic. It was supposed to be up and running in 2010, but a site had not been chosen in time.

Today U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow's office sent a release to 7&4 News confirming that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has selected a site in Mackinaw City. The new community based outpatient clinic will ease the burden of veterans throughout the area who regularly make long and often difficult trips to VA hospitals in other parts of the state to receive basic medical services. According to the release construction will soon begin and the VA estimates that the clinic will be opened this year.

In response to the decision, Senator Debbie Stabenow said, “This is welcome news for our Cheboygan-area veterans who have made great sacrifices in defense of our country. Keeping our promise to our veterans begins by providing each of them access to the health care services they have earned and this new clinic will do just that.”

Michael Wise, Cheboygan County Veterans Service Coordinator said, “This new clinic will help so many veterans in Northern Michigan get the care they deserve, preventing them from having to make the long drives to clinics across the state. This would not have been possible had it not been for Senator Stabenow’s tireless efforts and her support for Northern Michigan veterans.”

The release did not specify the exact location of the new clinic in Mackinaw City.
