TRAVERSE CITY -- Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem nationwide and northern Michigan is no exception.

According to northern Michigan Substance Abuse Services prescription drugs account for the second most commonly abused category of drugs -- a head of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and other drugs.

Local pharmacists tell 7&4 news that it's something they see frequently and most people that abuse the prescriptions get them from home.

Pharmacists say you can prevent prescription drug abuse -- the best ways are to monitor, secure and dispose.

This weekend there are prescription drug drop off sites that will be open in Emmet and Leelanau counties.

Saturday April 30, 2011:

Emmet County Drop-Off Center open from 9:00am-12:00pm

7363 Pleasantview Road, Harbor Springs, MI

Leelanau County Drop-Off Center at the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office open from 10:00am-2:00pm

8525 E. Government Dr. Suttons Bay, MI 49682
