Local high school is beating the odds

BENZIE -- A Northern Michigan school once considered an underdog by the state, is now being honored for its academic achievements.

Benzie Central High School has been selected by the Department of Education as a school that is beating the odds.

The decision was made Tuesday at the State Board of Education meeting in Lansing.

58% of the students at Benzie are considered economically disadvantaged, but the challenges outside the classroom didn't impact their proficiency scores.

Since 2008, scores in math, science, social studies, reading, and writing have all improved.

Benzie Central High School Principal, Pete Olson says, "Regardless of the economy, teachers are saying our job is to educate students and we're not going to let any hurdles get in the way."

The Department of Education will release the entire list of schools beating the odds next week.
