TRAVERSE CITY -- Right here in northern Michigan a Japanese Exchange Program is giving people a unique way to help to those suffering in Japan.
The 4-H Labo Japanese Exchange Program plans to bring a total of 55 Japanese teens to Michigan this summer and place them with host families.
Organizers say there are still 17 boys and 8 girls in Japan that are still waiting to be placed. They say it’s a way to make a real difference for those dealing with the devastation in Japan.
MSU Extension Educator Wanda Repke Says, “With what has happened in Japan, it's really important that we think about what we can really do to show that we care and to show that we support Japan and what better way to do that then host a young person.”
Right now eight families in Grand Traverse County, one in Leelanau and one in Charlevoix will be hosting a Japanese teen. They are set to arrive on July 23 and stay through August 19.
