UAW prepares for national day of protesting
TRAVERSE CITY -- Union members across the state are preparing for a battle with state lawmakers, much like what we have seen in Wisconsin and Ohio.
Monday, April 4th at noon, UAW workers plan to pickett at the Grand Traverse County Department of Human Services office on Elmwood Avenue. It's part of a national day of protest.
The union represents some 3,000 state workers in Northern Michigan, 17,000 across the state. The union is protesting the governor's plan to change laws that they say would restrict bargaining rights and cut jobs for state employees like police officers, fire fighters, and teachers.
Raymond Holman, UAW Local 6000 spokesperson says "Right now we're seeing an assault on working families, working people, and collective bargaining rights"
Republicans argue that union workers who have government jobs make more money, and have better benefits than workers doing similar jobs in the private sector.
