Northern Michigan unemployment falls, but still high

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth Thursday released data that breaks down the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate based on labor market. According to the DELEG the jobless rate fell in 16 of the 17 labor markets. The Detroit area was the only region to see an increase.

In Northeast Lower Michigan the rate fell in February to 15.5 percent from 16 percent in January. The labor force also grew by 100 people. In Northwest Lower Michigan the rate also fell in February from 14 percent in January to 13.5 percent. The labor force stayed the same at 144,000, but total employment increased by 800 jobs to 124,700.

A county by county break down of numbers shows many of the counties suffering from the highest unemployment rate are still in Northern Michigan. The county with the highest unemployment rate -- Mackinac County. It posted a February unemployment rate of 25.3 percent.
