Fewer students in Northern Michigan's largest school district are meeting state standards compared to last year.

For the Traverse City Area Public School District, fewer 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th graders met or exceeded state standards in all of the subjects compared to 2009 MEAP results.

The news was mixed for other grades.

6th graders did better at math this year, but worse in reading and social studies.

8th graders did better in math and science, but worse in reading.

3rd graders were the only students to see across the board improvement in math and reading.

No one at TCAPS could talk about the results.

Tonight on 7&4 News at eleven we'll take a closer look at several other Northern Michigan school districts to see how students are performing there.

4th and 7th grade students also had to take a new writing test last fall.  Scores statewide were low with less than 50% of students reaching proficiency.  In Northern Michigan, Suttons Bay had the best scores with 68.8% of 4th graders meeting or exceeding state standards.  But the story was much worse in Mason County Eastern Schools.  96.6% of 4th graders there did not meet state writing standards.
