Northern Michigan Regional Hospital invites community members to recycle unused medications and other items on Earth Day, Thursday, April 21, 2011.

PETOSKEY, MI -- Working with local law enforcement, the Hospital is offering a drive through drop-off in the Circle Drive entrance off of Mitchell Street from 7 – 4 p.m. Medications will be properly disposed of through an approved hazardous waste vendor and controlled substances will be handled by the Petoskey Police Department. Other items being accepted at these times include used eye glasses, hearing aids, cell phones, and shoes.

“Our primary focus for Earth Day this year is to educate the public that flushing unused medications is no longer a viable option if we want to maintain the purity of the Great Lakes, so we decided to do a medication (controlled substances, prescriptions, and over-the-counter medications) drop-off here at the Hospital. Then we decided that we could also recycle other medical items to help the community in their spring cleaning efforts. We hope to provide both a service and education to the community by allowing them to simply drive by and drop off their unwanted items,” said Linda Ward, chair of the Environmental Sustainability Team at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital.
