TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- The American Cancer Society is offering Look Good…Feel Better classes to help women undergoing cancer treatments feel better about their physical appearance. The classes are free and scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, at Munson Healthcare’s Smith Family Breast Health Center at Copper Ridge in Traverse City. The next free class is Tuesday, April 12.
“Cancer can rob a woman of her energy, appetite and strength,” says Judy Blandin, a trained and certified volunteer in the Look Good…Feel Better program. “But it doesn’t have to take away her self confidence.”
Blandin says women who participate in the class receive free make-up kits valued at $350 each, while an experienced, licensed cosmetologist offers expert beauty advice, including hair and wig care, and how to find and wear the right hat, wig or scarf. The free cosmetic kits are available in light, medium, dark, and extra dark shades. Women learn new cosmetic application techniques, and they receive tremendous physical and emotional support.
“For cancer patients, this is a great way to take a break from treatment and build new friendships,” Blandin notes. “Some women have even found themselves laughing for the first time in weeks. Look Good…Feel Better offers practical advice, while in a comfortable and safe environment. Women walk away feeling refreshed and renewed, not only about their appearance but also with regard to their outlook about the disease.”
The American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, and the National Cosmetology Association/Professional Beauty Association sponsor the program.
“By coming together as a group for the Look Good…Feel Better program, women learn that they are not alone in their fight against cancer,” explains Laura Pridgeon, Health Initiatives coordinator for the American Cancer Society. “If each woman takes away just one thing that makes her feel better, that’s wonderful.”
Class size is limited. To register for this free program, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.
