ELLIS TOWNSHIP, MI -- One man is behind bars after a high speed chase.
Cheboygan County, Ellis Township Sheriff Dale Clarmont said his Department was involved in a high speed chase on the evening of March 25. The pursuit happened on I-75 in Ellis Township. The chase resulted in an OWI third offense arrest, police said.
Information from Gaylord Dispatch advised that police received a call that a gray vehicle was traveling north on I-75 near the Otsego-Cheboygan County line in excess of 100mph.
Sheriff Clarmont said a deputy was in the Wolverine area and used radar to clock the vehicle at 132mph. The deputy started pursuit and called ahead for backup to the Tuscarora Township Police. One unit was able to enter I-75 in front of the vehicle and slow down the suspect. The vehicle continued but did not stop until it was blocked in by another Tuscarora Township unit, a Cheboygan County Sheriff Department unit and assistance from a DNR unit.
The investigation led to the arrest of Ryan Fitzpatrick Sweeney, 34, of Marquette. He was arrested for OWI third offense, a felony carrying up to five years in prison, and fleeing and eluding fourth degree, a two year felony.
Sweeny has been arraigned. Bond was set at $25,000.00 cash or surety.
His preliminary exam is set for April 6, 2011 at 1:30 pm
