TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- An emotional homecoming today for a Naval Commander from Northern Michigan.

He retuned today to surprise his children.

Lieutenant Commander Dave Sowers is back home after serving a year in North Africa.

He got a warm welcome from his wife Karen and 3 kids Casey, Charlie and 7-month old Sam.

Sowers was home for a short time in August for the birth of his son Sam, but will now get to spend more time with his family's new edition.

"I think we've got quite a few little trips planned here locally but nothing big. We're just going to hang out and spend some much needed time together - and my daughters birthday is tomorrow. Seven years old, right? " said Sowers.

Dave says he's glad to finally be home.

He found out about his mission to Africa on the same day he found out his wife was pregnant with their son Sam.
