PETOSKEY, MI -- There was an emergency response situation in Petoskey Wednesday morning.

Around 4, public safety officers responded to an incident at the River Road Sports Complex.

An officer noticed a car parked in the sports complex lot and after running the plates, determined the individual could still be in the area and could have a gun.

The Regional Emergency Response Team was called in and a perimeter was set up.

Later they found the body of a 27-year old Petoskey man with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Investigators say they feel they handled the incident well.

"The Emergency Response Team is made up of many different jurisdictions and they're always willing to come out if we think we need them and we always feel it's better to be safe than sorry, so we activated them this morning and they did a great job," said John Calabrese, Petoskey Department of Public Safety Director.

He said the department never thought there was a danger to the surrounding public.

Surrounding schools were contacted but they continued business as usual.
