Controversial club closes in TC
TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City leaders tell 7&4 News that a controversial club in downtown Traverse City has closed.
Tabu Lounge opened a few months ago and drew concerns from many residents and businesses in the area. The club featured “erotic dancers” but claimed their main business was selling art supplies so they could get out of building code upgrades and a zoning permit.
In response to concerns city leaders received, they decided to pass an ordinance limiting the hours of entertainment businesses to close at 2a.m., Tabu was opened until 4a.m.
The other idea city commissioners came up with was to authorize the installation of security cameras in the alley similar to cameras in the Old Town parking deck. The cameras would monitor criminal activity in the alley, already a problem that draws dozens of police calls to that location.
7&4 News has tried to contact the Tabu Lounge owner several times, but our calls have gone unreturned. Traverse City Mayor Chris Bzdok says the suveillance cameras will still be installed in the alley.
