TRAVERSE CITY -- St. Francis High School is starting a fundraising effort for science lab renovations to help its students stay competitive in the field. It’s also to keep students well-prepared for future studies.

There’s two science classrooms within St. Francis High School have not been updated since the original construction nearly 50 years ago.

Both the chemistry and physics lab needs to be refurbished and updated with modern equipment.

St. Francis High School Principal, Erick Chittle says, “The Biology Lab will be renovated with nine new student workstations, new lighting, new windows, and upgraded equipment.  This renovation will allow for advanced placement work and other higher-level work to occur within the classroom, impacting 300 students.  These renovations will ultimately lead to a deeper level of scientific thinking and better opportunities for our students in science-related fields.”

Wayne Mueller, Executive Director of Development and Foundation for Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, remarked, “St. Francis High School does not have access to public or millage funding.  To overcome this obstacle, there are a number of ways that people can help the school complete this project:  make a specific financial contribution to the project, provide free/discounted labor,  or a donation of materials.  We have a goal of $135,000 to reach by April 30, 2011, and we have currently raised $45,000.”

Oleson Foundation and the Art & Mary Schmuckal Family Foundation have given two “Leadership Grants.” Rick Skendzel from Architecture Technology, P.C. and Jody Bergman of Comstock Construction have generously donated their professional time and talent by providing consultation for the project.

Renovation and construction will occur during the summer of 2011.  Assuming the fundraising goal is met, both labs will be finished and functional by the start of classes in the fall of 2011.
