TRAVERSE CITY -- Teen drivers will soon have more restrictions out on the roads.

Starting March 30th a new law will restrict the number of passengers drivers under the age of 18 can transport in their vehicle while driving.

Under Public Act 268 they will only be allowed one passenger under the age of 21 in the car at any given time.

Level 2 graduates curfew will be now be from 10:00pm to 5:00am instead of starting at midnight.

Jessica Dancer has had her license for almost a year and says driving restrictions under the new law are completely unfair.

Dancer says, "It’s ridiculous! If I can’t go to the beach with my friends and we have to take separate cars now it's just going to make everything so much harder."

Michigan State Police Sergeant David Hall says, "Nighttime driving presents more challenges for inexperienced drivers and the reasoning for some of the changes in the current laws."

These are changes that give comfort to mothers like Michelle Brett whose daughter is fresh out of driver’s education classes.

Brett says, "When you’re young you don't realize how much you take for granite, knowing that they can only drive with one other person...there so easily distracted...a bunch of kids in the car that's dangerous."

For those parents concerned about the passenger limit because of car pooling, there’s no need to worry. The new law makes an exception for school and school sanctioned events. It also makes an exception for immediate family members.

Teens that violate these new provisions will be ticketed and two points will be added to their license.
