TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- By now, almost everybody has heard the phrase “there's an app for that.” Well, the expression may be true when referring to your own personal safety.

There are certain cell phone applications, like the “Sex Offender” app, that are changing the way we interact with the world.

“As soon as you open the app it shows you a list of the people in the area, and you click on each link and each name and it actually gives you their address, what they've done…and what they are doing now,” said app owner Phillip Davey.

As a parent, Davey has an appreciation for the sex offender app. He says the app gives him the knowledge he needs to protect the ones he loves. “It’s just good to know who is around you… especially if you have younger kids.”

The “Sex Offender” app is just one of several crime fighting applications growing in popularity. For business owners, your I-Phone can double as a surveillance camera when you are out of the office.

“They'll allow you to use an application to get in to the security system of your office. For example, if you have cameras you can be out on your boat sitting there…and can look at the cameras at your office just to see what is going on,” said Mac City manager Greg Nickerson.

Technology pros call this crime fighting movement a step toward a safer world. Making the world a safer place, well, there very well may be an app for that.
