SCOTTVILLE -- A 12-year-old student is in protective custody after he brought a pellet gun to school, causing a lockdown.
Police were called to Mason County Central Middle School in Scottville around 8:18 a.m. on a report of a student with a possible gun. Just minutes later the student was arrested and the weapon recovered.
It was determined at that time to be unloaded pellet gun.
The Mason County Sheriff's Office is crediting school officials for handling the situation with quick action. Investigators say school leaders followed all procedures in making sure everyone was safe in what could have been a very dangerous situation.
School leaders are also crediting law enforcement with a job well done.
"I would like to give kudos to our local police authorities for their time and response and working with us all along the way being nothing but supportive of the schools. It was great also because kids did the right thing and reporting it immediately to our principal," explained Jess Mount, Superintendent of Mason County Central Schools.
All students affected by the lockdown are being counseled.
