TRAVERSE CITY -- An alarming report Tuesday from Traverse City Police who say they arrested 6 drunk drivers in just the past few days.

They say what may be more shocking is that this many drunk drivers out on the road is normal.

Traverse City Police Department Captain Steve Morgan says, "It’s troubling, I think it's a little scary to tell you the truth."

Captain Morgan says the increase in drunken driving arrests over the past few days can be attributed to officers simply having the time to be proactive.

He explains, "The volume of calls were not so great this weekend so that they could actually be out looking a little bit for this kind of stuff, and when that occurs usually this occurs, we get a weekend that we pick up more drunk drivers than normal."

Six drunk drivers to be exact, whose blood alcohol contents were well above the legal limit.

Captain Morgan says, "Were not picking up people who are borderline, or just had a couple drinks kind of thing, these people have substantial blood alcohol content -- it is affecting their driving, effecting it to a point where it's obvious.

One of the men fled the scene of an accident at the Loading Dock Bar on Sunday. Another man arrested Monday had a blood alcohol level of .18% and was charged under the new enhanced drunk driving law - he was going the wrong way on East State Street.

Morgan says, "I hope were able to have nights like this where we can actively enforce that law so people are aware so they can say if I choose to do this, I could very well end up in jail."

As for the drunk driving suspects, they were all taken to jail and will be arraigned in the coming days.

Those who blew a .17% or higher may face stiffer penal ties.
