Northwestern Michigan College was among 10 community colleges recognized nationally at the recent Community College Futures Assembly, conducted by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida.

TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- NMC was named a finalist for the prestigious "Bellwether Award" for its successful annual fund-raising program.

NMC's entry focused on the success of its Annual Campaign for Scholarships and Programs. Despite the poor economy, thanks to the dedicated effort of NMC volunteers, the annual campaign has exceeded progressively higher fundraising goals for the last four consecutive years, including a record goal of $400,000 for the 2010-11 campaign.

"We hope our community of supporters take great pride in this recognition," said Kathleen Guy, NMC Vice President and Executive Director of the NMC Foundation. "The NMC Foundation would not be able to provide this vital support to programs and students without our dedicated volunteers and our generous supporters."

Now in its 17th year, the Assembly convenes annually as an independent national policy forum for key opinion leaders to identify critical issues facing the future of community colleges, and to recognize Bellwether finalist colleges as trend-setting institutions.

The 2010-11 campaign co-chairs, Bonnie Alfonso and Paul Maurer, an NMC alumnus, traveled to Florida with NMC staff to present lessons learned to Assembly participants.
