TRAVERSE CITY -- It's a dangerous situation that could be lurking right before your eyes, your child suffering from depression or bipolar disorder.

Studies show 5% of adolescents have major depression and the symptoms are difficult to diagnose.

That's why a local psychiatrist, Dr. Sander Weckstein, is offering his knowledge up to parents in the area who want to learn about the conditions.

He says the first step is understanding what the problems are and how to spot them.

Weckstein also said, "When kids start acting shy. If they used to be social and suddenly withdraw... These are kind of warning signs."

He says more serious symptoms include feelings of worthlessness or even thoughts of suicide.

To learn more, Dr. Weckstein is offering a class on March 8th from 6:30 to 8 pm at Traverse City Central High School in the Library Media Center.

You may also call Northern Michigan Psychiatric Service, P.C. at 231-935-0355.
