The significant early February winter storm has left a mess in its path across parts, but not all of the viewing area.

As predicted by the 7&4 Storm Team, the highest snowfall amounts along with the worst conditions were the further south one went with the accumulating snow ending near highway M-68 which was about as far north as the snow got.

The highest totals we could find in our viewing area came out of Oceana County where Hart tallied 14.0” of snow.  Cadillac ended up with a foot exactly, and Baldwin checked in with 10.0”. A viewer there near Wolf Lake in Lake County reports to the 7&4 Storm Team that there are three to four foot drifts in that region. Grayling also ended up with nearly 10” of snowfall. Further north, lighter amounts were noted with areas just south of Cheboygan getting around an inch of snow and Petoskey just getting dusted.

The main factor wasn’t even so much the snow, but the wind with gusts over 50 mph recorded in a few neighborhoods.

That has led to extensive blowing/drifting with dozens of school closed.

In fact, the Mason County sheriff’s department told people to simply stay home and off the roads as they were impassable.

This storm system is a quick mover and will exit Northern Michigan by early Wednesday afternoon with some sunshine perhaps poking through later in the day. Quieter weather is forecasted for the remainder of the week.
