CADILLAC -- Road crews and grocery stores are making sure they're ready for this blast of winter weather.
7&4's Kate Fox reports from Cadillac - one of the areas expected to get hit hard.
Wexford County Road Commission Manager Alan Cooper called his entire crew in Tuesday afternoon to get an early start on some critical prep work.
Cooper says, “Getting their routes ready, making sure the snows pushed back were mixing sand and salt in case we need extra of that, at the end of the day they'll have their trucks ready and we will be prepared when this storm hits."
Cooper says the eight inches of snow expected for Cadillac is no threat for his road crew and it’s the high winds in the forecast that might make their job more challenging.
He explains, "A windy storm is going to be a problem because you have the continued drifting, you'll clean a road up and have to come back and get it again right away."
As the trucks worked to quickly push back the snow banks, many folks were busy pushing grocery carts stocking up on stable items before the big storm hits.
Cadillac Resident Deb Jackson says, “I’m out stocking up on the staples, my cats have to eat, I’ve got to have bread and milk."
Manager of Glen's Brad Sigler says they called in more employees for the rush and made sure they had plenty of the products people were after.
If you have to be out in this winter storm Cooper says the biggest safety advice is to take it slow driving and allow yourself additional travel time.
He says, "Don't crowd the plows, when you come up behind them there’s a good chance they could be stopping and backing up to clear an intersection. When you’re traveling in this weather you need to be prepared…make sure you have your boots and a blanket in case your car breaks down, and if it's really drifting badly and you don't have to travel, don’t!"
