TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- With temperatures struggling to crack 20 degrees, people are struggling to keep their homes warm. Some families turn to supplemental heating devices like space heaters.
Firefighters stress the importance of buying a quality space heater that is approved by Underwriters Laboratories.
“That just means that Underwriters Laboratories have taken the time to test those heaters to make sure they are safe to be in your homes,” said Randy Agruda, Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department Public Information Officer.
Heating your home safely is important, but it is also important to not spend a fortune in the process. DTE Energy says the best way to avoid a high bill is to keep your home comfortable but not too hot.
“For every degree you dial down (on your thermostat) you can expect to save about 3% on your energy bill. Purchase and install a programmable set back thermostat. When you are away from your home or business, the thermostat automatically sets back and saves you money. Folks save as much as 20% on their annual energy bill with programmable set back thermostats,” said Steve Rawlings, DTE Energy.
Rawlings also said that homes with proper humidity levels provide greater comfort at lower temperatures.
