State Rep. Wayne Schmidt on Wednesday was tapped to lead the House Commerce Committee by Speaker Jase Bolger. “I’m honored that Speaker Bolger selected me to chair the committee,” Schmidt said. “Reviving the job market in Michigan relies on the business climate in our state, so it will be imperative that we provide the tools at the government level to encourage and stimulate entrepreneurial efforts across the state.” Schmidt, R-Traverse City, also will serve on the Health Policy; Natural Resources, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation; and Transportation committees. This will be the second term the lawmaker has served on the House Transportation Committee. The House has 19 bipartisan committees that discuss, analyze and revise legislation before presenting it to the full chamber for action. Through committee review of a bill, lawmakers decide whether to recommend, amend or substitute legislation.
